Wine Review: 2013 Lia's Vineyard Pinot Noir by Patricia Green

With the 2013 Lia’s Vineyard, Patricia Green gives us a window into ‘single vineyard’ Pinot Noir and the affects that sourcing from one particular site can have on the expression of a varietal. This bottle is an amazing example of how terroir (the effects of the weather, soil, slope and climate) can be identified in a wine. I loved this wine because of it’s ability to evolve even after you’ve popped the cork. If you’re willing, sit and enjoy over the course of an evening to see how each swirl and sip can change. At first this wine is more restrained, opening up with a soft aroma of dusty cherries and minerals. Overtime however, a baritone earth note and long drawn out finish shows itself. This is what people talk about when they say a wine is "seductive", "mysterious" or "sensuous".

Lia's Vineyard Pinot Noir by Patricia Green uses only grapes sourced from "Lia's Vineyard" in the  Chehalem Mountains AVA in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. What I think is fascinating about this wine is the interesting mixture of soil types that are present. The Lia's Vineyard is the only sourced vineyard where they pick wines from fruit that crosses the Marine/Volcanic soil fault line. By doing this Patricia Green Cellars claims that, "the Lia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir bottling is a snapshot at the entirety of the rest of our vineyards and winery".
